Scholarship Program

Thanks to donations of young Tom Sullivan, a scholarship program was set up in 2003 to enable motivated students from low-income families to go to high school. Most students in San Miguel Dueñas can not afford to attend high school because they do not have the money to pay for the tuition, books, and uniform costs. Unfortunately in Guatemala the government does not pay these costs.
The High School Scholarship program was established in 2003 with three students. Open Windows has since sponsored more than 400 scholarships. This year there are 30 scholarship students.
The chosen, talented students are given funds to cover the costs of uniforms, books, and transportation. In return, they are asked to keep Open Windows informed of their progress. We find that high school graduates, in turn, help their brothers and sisters attend school.
Open Windows also helps graduates in preparing for new job interviews, which includes writing a Curriculum Vitae. We hope to place these students in the local job market.
In return, Open Windows scholarship students or family members take turns cleaning the library early each morning. In 2011, we started the community service program. During vacation the scholarship students come to the learning center to help small groups of primary children with math and reading skills. This, in turn, helps them learn to teach, work with others and speak in front of a group. Only $500 sends a scholarship recipient to high school for one year.

Flor's Letter   At Open Windows Learning center, we are very proud of our high achieving scholarship students. One particular standout of our program is Flor Cabrera. She wrote a letter to Open Windows and we wanted to share it with you.

My name is Flor de Maria Monroy Cabrera.  I’m 17 years old. I’m taking marketing and advertising at school, and next year will be my last year.
My short term goals are: to finish marketing and advertising, and work to help my parents.

Long term goals are: to continue studying in the university' s social science communication degree. This is one of the degrees that I like to study. Also I would like to start my own foundation where I can help teenagers like me with financial problems. Day by day I’m getting closer to my dreams and towards doing what I want to accomplish.

My life has not been easy.  When I was 12 my dad died and I did not have his support anymore. I only had my mom, who has to work very hard to support the family. My mom told me that she could only send me to primary school.  Because of economic problems I could not continue high school.  I decided to go to Open Windows to apply for a scholarship. After applying and taking some exams, I got the scholarship.  Thanks to Open Windows, I’m going to finish my degree.

Currently I have a sister and a brother. My mother married a man whom he supports me in what he can. Thanks to Open Windows for being part of my present and future.

My name is Beverlin Lisseth, I have three brothers, who for lack of financial resources can not study. I live in Aldea San José Calderas and I have to go to study in Chimaltenango to realize my dreams.

My goal is to continue studying, to be someone in life so that I can help my family and my brothers to study.

Thanks for the opportunity that Open Windows gives me to continue my studies and I hope that someone can contribute so that it can continue my studies.

This year I am starting first basic (7th grade), in the future I want to be an architect and be very recognized throughout Guatemala and that is why I want to study hard to have good grades and learn everything they teach me, so that I can help my family in the future.

My name is Mindy Celeste, I am 13 years old, I live with my mom and dad, I am the oldest of 5 siblings, 10, 7, 5 and 3 years old. My goals are: to be a primary school teacher, nurse or engineer.

I opted for the scholarship because my parents do not have the possibility to pay for my studies.
I am very grateful to have given me the opportunity to continue studying, I promise to study hard and have good grades.
